Do you have multiple instances of "nessus-update-plugins"? What timestamp(s) do you have on the script(s)? Also, if the previous instance was installed as part of a package manager (eg, rpm), it would probably be best to use that to remove as much as possible.

Uninstall and then manually go around and clean up eeverything. There is plenty of old stuff left behind. Only after you are 250% sure the system is clean may you retry to install nessus 2.2.6
