The Nessus source includes two sample config files under
nessus-core/doc - Top20-2003 and Top20-2002. You could use
one of those to get started. And if you don't have easy
access to the source, look under:

http://cvsweb.nessus.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/nessus-core/doc/

However, when I try to run "nessus" from the
command line, I get the following error message:
(nessus:13379): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

The problem isn't that you haven't built Nessus with GTK
support but that Nessus can't open your display. Where are
you running X? What's DISPLAY set to? And, if you're ssh'ing
into the host where you're running nessus, are you allowing
ssh to redirect X11 connections?
