I want to test one of our servers which user a client

This should work.

Nessus freezes when I try scanning.

What exactly freezes -- the client, server, a plugin?

At what point does "it" freeze? What does nessusd.messages say? Can you
trace program execution using something like strace or truss?

What does "nessusd -d" report?

If there something I'm doing wrong or is nessus unable
to perform this task?

Does the scan freeze if you don't configure a client cert for the
service?
