Was some other Linux distribution installed on the Gentoo box previously; eg, Red Hat, Mandrake, SuSE? For example, do either /etc/redhat-release or /etc/SuSE-release exist? Alternatively, have permissions been changed on /var/db/pkg to restrict access? George -- theall@tifaware.com
