I am most annoyed because I have seen this trend before. Now you want us to register, next year it becomes purely pay for subscription, one year later Nessus isn't even supported any more and is replaced by a proprietary Tenable product.
Apparently I was mistaken about the number of contributors. I just assumed that with 2000+ GPL plug-ins, there must have been quite a few people involved for non commercial reasons.
But this is exactly the point. One of the great myths about open source is that there are armies of contributors to various projects. The truth is, most projects have small numbers of very active developers with large numbers of users.
I'm sorry you are annoyed by the changes. I was hoping that Tenable's involvement with Nessus and the major feature enhancements we've made to it over the past two years would be appreciated. Tenable has also added (our estimate) another 20-40,000 Windows users to the Nessus community with our NeWT scanner. User's are not required to register for NeWT use either, just the non-GPL plugin feeds.
