George it would appear that I mistook preferences as being all server preferences because in the stream that comes from the server all the preferences (both server and plugin) are contained within a server preference tag. Either way, there is still a difference in the number of preferences in total. I shall investigate this further. Either number sounds too high for purely server preferences; there are only a couple dozen of those. As for plugin preferences, those are based on the plugins actually loaded by the server using the NASL function script_add_preference(), not switches passed from a client.
