Has anyone else had the experience that when scanning XP-SP2 systems, the
portscan just seems to hang and will not finish? I assume this is due to
the newly enabled 'Firewall' but I am wondering why nessus doesn't just find
the ports closed or filtered and move on?

Because it has to wait for a timeout on each port. And 2second timeouts
times 65535 ports makes for 36 hours. Even with 20 port scanned parallel
this takes quie a while.
