Russ, I trust this information will be valuable to many people.
One of the most important tools for administrators is the SYSPREP tool.
I just learned the hard way that the SP2-approved sysprep will not work on
systems that were upgraded from SP1.
It only works on systems that were pre-installed with SP2, by using a
slipstreamed SP2 install CD, or an original XP with SP2 CD.
The following is from the readme.txt file which came with the deployment
tools:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You cannot run Sysprep.exe on an installation of Windows XP SP1 that
was upgraded to Windows XP SP2 using Update.exe. Sysprep can be run
only on integrated ("slipstreamed") Windows installations."

We have many IBM machines, and I wanted to create a new master image. I
took one PC, loaded it with a factory image (SP1), upgraded the c:\i386
folder to SP2, and then installed SP2 on the machine itself.
Sysprep doesn't work on this kind of configuration (SP1 upgraded to SP2),
however the old (SP1) sysprep tool will do just fine.
