My experience with MSAS was also similar. To verify whether MSAS is
really working, I used SpybotS&D to scan my PC after surfing for
sometime. MSAS, didn't alert me during the surfing, but SpybotS&D
detected a lot. No single security solution is a saviour.

Defense in depth is your friend...
I did an analysis of Ad-Aware, SpyBot, MSAS, NAV '06 Beta, and
CounterSpy. I found NAV '06 Beta to be a resource pig that was
horrible at spyware protection. Ad-Aware was also mostly ineffective.

MSAS caught a lot, but so much was set to ignore that I couldn't
recommend it with a clear conscience. (What kind of deal with the
devil do you have to sign to NOT have Gator marked as spyware?!)

SpyBot was the recommendation for freeware, and CounterSpy for
enterprise level detection. Neither are perfect, but together you
should be fairly well protected.
