RE: email-borne viruses hit zero

My mileage certainly varies. Postini is catching virtually all viruses for
us. We peaked during the 2 weeks prior to Christmas (this has been an
annual event in the 7 years I've been responsible for antivirus measures).
Total infected SMTP messages received during December was 6,416 of a
message total of 107,485, or just under 6%. I counted 770 in a single
24-hour period. A whopping 63.7% of those 6,418 were of the Sober.J
variety. There *has* been a marked decline since the first of the year to
~100 per day, but hardly approaching zero.

I was slightly sceptical about the downward trend, but looking at our own
stats plus those on the Messagelabs website it would appear that there is a
slight downward trend over the course of 2004.

http://www.messagelabs.com/emailthreats/default.asp

The Virus Intercepts graph shows this trend over 2004, with around 1 in 10
in March dropping to below 1 in 50 at the end of December. December also
shows a marked drop over the rest of the year: around 1 in 33 in November
dropping to around 1 in 50 in December.

However: taking the previous year (2003) into account the general trend
appears to be that virus-borne emails are on the increase, shown by the
blue
trend line that has been drawn on the graph:
http://www.messagelabs.com/img/eng/emailthreats/virus_large.jpg

The net result is that the trend line is flattening out, rather than
continuing to rise at any significant rate. The projection appears to be
for around 1 in 20 in 2005.

So I think that people like Stu should enjoy the brief respite while they
can!

Regards,

Mike
