I had an older system that I thought I'd try to install Server 2003 on.
I formated the drive and installed server 2003 with no problem at all.
It ran great. When I installed 2003 SP1 the system would boot but just
hang with a blank desk top and the hard drive developed the hiccups. I
could hear it accessing at regular intervals but it would not proceed. A
3 finger salute and process viewer was useless. The drive hicupped even
in safe mode.

The hard disk is defective. Previously nothing important was on any of
the bad sectors that are apparently present so it didn't matter.
However, during the installation of SP1 something vital has been moved
to an area of bad sectors. Replace the disk.

Good luck,
