Your probably going to see them just use the power button if you did
that anyways. And if they were missing a shutdown button, the mentality
of an end user, would probably be to call you or the helpdesk trying to
report a virus or at least wondering where it went. Why don't you push
the updates out when they login in the morning. That's when most of the
places I have seen do updates, asset management, etc... The user logs
on and goes for their morning coffee. Or you could just send a memo
saying to leave their PC's on when they go home at night. ;)

Craig,

Not to harp .. but policy policy policy. We are not a big shop .. edu too. So some researcher HAS to have some share ALL the time .. they are tenured can come in 24x7 .. but can still be a end user .. so I ask .. put it in writing .. copy the chair .. details please. I remind them it is state equipment. I adjust the machine .. put a little sign on the power button .. then .. pass out the details, copy the chair.... Now .. some jomoke pushes the power button under the sign .... plugs in a microwave. I write a little memo, copy the chair .. keep some files .. they quiet down. At least in business someone will eventually show them to the door.
