you should be able to do this with PAM authentication if your system uses Pluggable Authentication Modules.

man pam
man pam.conf

if you are unfamiliar with PAM, the www.sun.com website has some good free docs about how it works.

Is there a way to lock passwords for lets say 5 minutes after so many bad attempts and for them to reset automatically after certain period? We do this under Windows and Netware and your email just made me wonder under linux. Just curious if possible or any tips.

There are so plenty password cracking tools around the web:

- Anger
- Cain & Abel
- Crack
- Hydra
- John The Ripper
- LCP
- LM Crack
- L0phtCrack 4
- PWdump3
- RainbowCrack
- THC KeyFinder
- Venom
- YaHa
- ...

Some should be more relevant than others, depending on what kind of passwords you want to crack :)

Drop me an email if you need the links to these tools, but googling around should give you what's needed.

Hope this helps ...
