RE: PIX Transparent mode

Transparent mode is equivalent to a layer 2 bridge. PIX OS version 7
and above support this feature (as well as the FWSM). The pix will
firewall layer 3 traffic, as well as certain layer2 traffic when
operating in transparent mode. The practicality comes in when you want
to place a firewall in an existing architecture without readdressing
everything. You just plug the firewall into a switch( or vlan) with the
devices you want firewalled, and then plug the router into the firewall
(or switch or vlan).
