Managing IPS and IDS is not around the amount of signatures the unit has or not, it's around current active, most prominent not having DOS signatures for example windows 3.2 or 95 etc. The benefit for Fortigate is unlimited users based on environment spec (Spec the unit for the environment) Gives you 1. Firewall 2. WebContent Filtering 3. Spam Filtering and Management 4. VPN and Client RAS 5. IDP and IPS 6. Antivirus and File Blocking and Management 7. IM and P2P Management and control 8. Deployed in Nat and Transparent mode making easy to deploy in any environment. The Sonicwall we deployed agreed was easy manageable and the client easily adopted to the setup and management of the unit. Growing the unit in the environment, adding High Availability and enabling all functions indicated that the Fortigate is a more flexible cost effective and UTM Solution. I feel that for SOHO solutions the Sonicwall is a good solution, with Fortigates Bundle Service model on the SOHO products I feel that a lot of other vendors are coming a bit short. SONICWALL has more than 1800 forIPS and IDS, i think SONICWALL has more capabilities and is very easy. I have worked with ISS, Source Fire, Sonicwall (Firewall), Cisco, CheckPoint and Tipping Point.
From a UTM perspective Fortinet is great.

Is there one that you would recommend looking at? Zak

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone out ther has experience with ISS's
Proventia
product line. If you are not familiar :
http://www.iss.net/products_services/enterprise_protection/proventia/m_s eries.php
What are your thoughts on this particular device? What about other similar integrated security solutions? I know that it might not be
the
best thing to "put all your eggs in one basket", so to speak, by using an all in one appliance. However, I have a limited buget, limited time, ... you all know what I am talking about. The real trouble is I am handling ALL aspects of computing technology for my company ranging from software/web developer, sys admin, network admin (yes I do the cabling too), you get the picture. Now, I would love to be able to have the time to have a firewall + IDS + etc... setup on, for
instance,
a properly configured SELinux box (which I still might do BTW), but a
semi-managed solution is very appealing to me time-wise (my time) and
staff-wise (me). Any help along these lines is greatly appreciated.
Current usage is :
1) Workstation web access
2) WebDAV server through HTTPS
3) SSH tunneling
Additional future usage :
1) Web application server ASP.NET (to be moved from remote host to
apache with mod_mono)
2) Remote/Mobile office locations
If you need to know more, please let me know. Thanks everyone,
Zak
