Start with firewall hardening documents. Since you don't mention what firewall it is, or even what server, we can't help you much technically. My suggestion is to start with firewall/OS and ip-stack hardening documents to make the server itself resilient to DoS. If you are working agains DDoS you need to do a lot on upstream routers, so that may be more difficult to defend against. Hope that at least helps for a start, Chris -----Original Message----- From: misa@hotmail.co.uk [mailto:misa@hotmail.co.uk] Sent: Fri 23-Sep-05 17:13 To: firewalls@securityfocus.com Subject: Honours Project - Ideas? Hey guys. I was fortunate enough to have a friend to point me in the direction of these mailing lists for some guidance. I'm starting my Honours Year, currently studying Computer Networks and Distributed Systems. Since I'm gonna be in my honours year there's a big Honours Project that I have to take on. My interests are in Network Security even with my lack of knowledge. I was hoping for some help from you guys. Maybe a few ideas or ways to make my honours project idea a bit better. The idea is to generate difficult loads on a server through different attack methods such as DOS attacks, multiple user simulations, etc to try and bring down the server. While this is happening logs will be collected on the server loads during those times to get solid data of the attacks. After this I will try to develop algorthims or parameters to improve the firewall/server so that these attacks will not be able to bring down the server in the future. Basically to tune the server and make it more efficient. The project idea is called "White Hat Hacking" as titled by a staff member at my University. If those of you with knowledge on this have any ideas to further my project this would be greatly appreciated. Anything you can add or help me with would be awesome thanks. Asim
