the problem w/ most layer 7 firewalls is it can't handle too much traffic. thus you want a fast stateful inspection firewall such as a pix 6.x (7.0 does some layer 7) or checkpoint NG-AI (checkpoint has NG-AI & NGX so some layer 7) filtering out most of the drop traffics. This leaves the layer 7 firewall behind to only worry about 'accepted' traffic. which will be MUCH less than it would of been if it was up front. Also another reason to have a 2 firewalls is so u don't have to worry if 1 gets rooted, but thats another story.
