The leader in this sector by a huge distance is Sygate. Simple. The other best technologies in this sector (NAC - Network Access Control + PFW) are Cisco, Zone and ISS (not the Black Ice but the Enterprise Proventia). A number of independent tests have been conducted and results can be found all over the web but all the techs above will provide the functionality you require, depends on what other elements you are looking for like Host Integrity Rule checking, Automatic Policy switching based on network credentials, and NAC. -----Original Message----- From: linux starved [mailto:linuxstarved@gmail.com] Sent: 25 July 2005 18:46 To: firewalls@securityfocus.com Subject: Personal Firewalls I have been testing personal firewall's for use with our users that have laptops, to protect them (and my network)when they are away from our virus scanners. I have tried Black Ice, Norton, Tiny, Zone Alarm and McAfee. The two with the most potential for our needs (in my opinion) were ZA and Tiny. The research conducted however, merely scratched the surface, and I was hoping for feedback from somone familiar with these two products. We need something that is compatible with Sophos AV (ZA actually had a beta that I tested), also we are looking for something that does not interrupt the user and can only be configured by an admin. The less interaction our users have with the application the happier we will be. The following are the most important features: -Runs quietly in background, once it is pre-configured by admin -Thorough detection of all processes, and requested inbound/outbound connections -Changes can be made only by an administrator -Compatibility with Sophos Thank you in advance, all help and advice is greatly appreciated. ----------------------------------------- Please note that as part of Gradian's company policies we monitor incoming and outgoing email to protect the operation of our computer systems.
