Part of the extension of Free(tm) (or Open) software comes from the nature of software, in that once the community builds a 'barn' everybody can get their own copy for the cost of duplication (nearly nothing).
This is where the confusion between Free(tm) (as in freedom) and free (as in cheap) comes in. Cheap is is a side-effect of Free(tm), not the other way 'round.
