My two cents on the subject topic: I personally trust the security
of firewalls I build from the ground up using strictly open source
components, and do not trust the security of proprietary code.

I've made peace with management holding the diametrically opposite
view by putting something mostly harmless, like a PIX, in series
with the firewall I trust, using it in the place where I'd normally
be putting the screening router.
