Nothing is wrong with iptables - just assumed question was
about standalone platforms. Small PC with Linux onboard is
suitable for that as well...

I think iptables it's as good as the rules you use. If your
rules are bad your firewall will be bad, if you have good
rules iptables it's a very good solution, very flexible.
