Well, it is not impossible. You can use a /31 mask with 2 systems - one
using the network base as its IP address, one using the broadcast one.
It is not nice and can lead to problems - but can be done.  Hell, I've
even seen a firewall with an IP address 10.0.0.0, connected to several
10.* addresses in the various interfaces (including one 10.0.0.0/24 of
course). Routing (or analysis thereof) was hell of a headache but it
worked...
