We almost implemented a product called Fatpipe, http://www.fatpipeinc.com/, (about $6000) which did load balancing and fail over protection. The Fatpipe acts as the DNS server for your domain(s) therefore you are able to get two different ISP's and IP blocks and the Fatpipe will only give out an IP for a circuit that it knows is up and working. We eventually scrapped the idea because it introduced a new single point of failure (what if the fatpipe died?) By the time we added a redundant power supply and support contract the pricing was getting pretty high. To have eliminated this single point of failure we would have had to get another fatpipe bringing the price up to the $12,000 area. I think that some of the firewall manufacturers are incorporating this type of feature into their products. I believe Sonicwall has a few models that can do this but I'm not sure if they work the same way (i.e. dynamic DNS). Good luck, Mike Michael Fredericks Network Administrator Nautic Partners, LLC -----Original Message----- From: Kal [mailto:kalsys@xtra.co.nz] Sent: Monday, August 23, 2004 7:49 PM To: firewalls@securityfocus.com Subject: FW failover solution Hi List, I'm looking for a product that can sit in front of a Firewall (between FW and Internet) and allow for 2 internet connections, one to sit idle as a hot/warm/cold standby to the main connection? We are looking for a tool that is geared towards the SME market. Has anyone got any experience with any products that can do this? Thanks in advance.
