You cannot configure a PIX firewall to act as an SMTP relay. Although it supports the Mail Guard feature, you still need a separate SMTP relay server to hanldle incoming and outgoing Internet email. ******************************************** Joe Palomo CISSP - Sr. Network Engineer Network Systems Department - MIS Unit Sacramento Superior Court palomoj@saccourt.com ******************************************** -----Original Message----- From: David Hawley [mailto:rhino007_us@yahoo.com] Sent: Thursday, August 12, 2004 9:18 AM To: 'Aaron' Cc: firewalls@securityfocus.com Subject: RE: SMTP Relay The PIX Firewall handles SMTP with "Application Inspection" on port 25, there is support for both NAT and PAT. ALSO PIX supports something Cisco Calls "Mail Guard" under Application Inspection, for 7 commands only, to make mail more secure, unsupported commands return a "NOOP", you might have To disable Mail Guard for certain servers such as Microsoft's Exchange and A server running ESMTP. PIX will inspect the order of these 7 commands to Make sure they come in, in the proper order and that they are formatted correctly.
