If the drives were still usable by the second department, the degausser didn't
do an adequate job as far as data secyrity goes.

What did you use to re-write the servo tracks on the drives? (If you didn't have
to, then the disk wasn't degaussed properly - and if you did have to, the disk
won't be usable at all until the servo tracks are re-written).
