First off, what OS is the original data.  Some operating systems don't
have slack space...at least not slack space that's valuable from a
forensic standpoint.  Windows (FAT and NTFS) do leave forensically
valuable slack space on the drive.

If you image the drive using dd, you are doing a bit image...that
includes slack.  You can then do string searches for example on the
drive and see what is available.  There is also a utility, dls that's
part of the sleuth kit that will specifically extract the slack space.

Does anyone know some good tools for recovering file slack?  I have
looked at tools such as GetSlack and M-Sweep, but was wondering if there
are any other good tools available (preferable freeware tools).  Thanks.
