You can use the 'hdparm' utility within Linux to determine HPA as well. There is also DRIVEID from Mark Menz that will do this in a DOS environment.
Just to add to the list, as an FYI. The newest version of The Sleuthkit (1.73) has a program called "diskstat" that is designed to detect HPA's as well.
