Hello future CISSPs! For those of you studying independently for the CISSP, here are insights from my knowledge and experience with this certification exam: Key points: Get a book or online test, and take a cold-turkey study test, and study those where you score the lowest, by domain. 70% (or less) is a good starting point. Score each section/domain with a % correct. You can do the dry run from paper tests over a period of time, from 5 min, to as much as you like, in bits or bites (ha!ha!). If you prefer online, CCCure offers good practice tests, also by domain. Many folks in IT/IT security will score lowest in Physical security--it contains test questions that we normally don't deal with A lot of the test taking success is reading the question and comprehending it, then applying the BEST answer. There often is more than one correct answer. So get yourself a good exam prep study guide. The only one I know is NOT that good is CISSP for Dummies, but people tell me those CD tests are good. SVR guides still work very well, even dated, for question type and content. Borrow a book if you know someone who's taken the exam, or buy it used on Amazon--don't throw money out the window. This is all you really need, for strategies to pass the CISSP on the first try, without throwing valuable time window. You have no time to waste, if you're like the rest of us, --so apply the 80/20 rule and economize! These are the bottom line, based also on an article I wrote, that was published in last year's ISSA Security Journal. Nothing in this strategy has changed since this was published, except more certifications have cropped up. Advice is on target to help you pass the CISSP in the shortest amount of time. If you want the whole article, send email with "CISSP article" in subject line. Some people swear by study groups, and they do work for some. But stats show they are the least effective method to pass the exam, for time spent and results. As a 5-year CISSP holder, I've taught the prep course, and I am a member of the Phoenix ISSA which has hosted two 12-week study groups with good pass rates. Most people do not know when they walk away if they passed the exam or not. These strategies will reduce your time and stress in preparation. Good luck in your exam and future CISSP certification!
