[CISSP-D] NIST dropping DES

Subject: [CISSP-D] NIST dropping DES
Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 11:13:38 -0400
Not exactly following the thread here, but since it's about crypto: the DES
standard is no longer being used by NIST due to it's low security and they
have adopted AES as a better choice. Also, SHA-1 may be dropped in favor of
stronger SHA algorithms. SHA-1 is breakable, according to a few researchers
who have been trying to break it, but the final results aren't out yet. Read
all about it: http://csrc.nist.gov/index.html (see CSD News on right side of
page).

One of the books I read gave example of how symmetric encryption can be
used for authenticating to another entity with whom you have a shared
secret.

Yet, the Shon Harris books says that symmetric encryption only provided
Confidentiality and integrity but not auth and non repudiation.

Who is right?

Thanks
