I believe the compensation is something that you agreed upon when you were
hired.  So when you find out someone is making more than you when you are
the better worker, you should have no reason to be upset because you agreed
to that salary.  Your compensation should be something you have already set
before you even take the job.  Of course, you'll have to do your work ahead
of time and determine what the job will entail and what you feel is fair.
If you're not happy it's time to look elsewhere.  There's nothing more
miserable than thinking you're getting screwed and constantly thinking you
should be making more money.  If and when more responsibility is required of
you then it's time to have a small talk with your manager.  Most people will
simmer and complain but they'll never do anything about it.  You have to be
the one that takes the lead because most corporate environments are not
willing to just throw money or some other form of compensation at you.

          As you know, it's all about working and applying yourself to the
career. There are no shortcuts IMHO, other than hard work and long hours.
IT
gravy train jobs are not commonplace anymore. 

What about those of us who have put in "hard work and long hours" and
aren't getting compensated for it?
