The Security+ cert is actually much better than the other CompTIA 
certifications - unfortunately, it suffers from the stigma attached to 
that organization.  I took and passed Security+ earlier this year; I 
took it primarily because I wanted another "perspective" on IT security 
before focusing on CISSP.

It was a moderately difficult but quite fair test, focused somewhat 
more on technical issues than CISSP.  Hope this helps.
