Weather it is fair or not the value of certifications is largely on the perception of others and not always on the amount of information or knowledge you are tested on. So to be honest I have not studied the CompTIA Security+ certification in great depth. However, I can tell you that most of the security engineers I know do not respect this certification. For a beginner I would suggest the SANS: GIAC- GSEC. This is well known and respected. For a more advanced engineer I would suggest the CISSP or CISA.
